Abstract Cinnamic acid was applied in the fifth continuous cropping cucumber soil as root exudates. The results showed that cucumber growth, activity of root dehydrogenase,ATPase, soil microorganisms and nutrient uptake had been inhibited when cinnamic acid application was more than 50 mg·kg -1 soil. And the inhibition at a higher concentration was stronger than those at lower one.So the auto toxic effect of cinnamic acid was one of the factors of continuous cropping barrier in cucumber growth.
