Abstract:Melatonin is a conserved pleiotropic molecule commonly existed in plants and animals and involved in plant regulation of several growth and development processes and stress responses.Many studies in recent years have shown that melatonin has a favorable effect on improving crop tolerance to various biotic and abiotic stresses.As a high effective antioxidant,melatonin can scavenge free radicals such as reactive oxygen species(ROS),improve nutrient uptake,osmoregulatory substance production,and cell membrane stability by regulating the transcript levels of enzymes and transcription factors associated with the adversity-antioxidant system,and improve plant tolerance to adversity stress.In addition,it can also reduce the damage of adversity stress to plants by participating in the synthesis of various hormones and activating plant stressrelated hormones.This paper reviewed the synthesis and metabolism of melatonin,and latest research progress in major solanaceous vegetables resistance to adversity stress during resent 10 years,so as to provide references for its future application in vegetables against adversity stress.
