Abstract:Carotenoids play vital roles in plant photosynthesis and protecting against chlorophyll bleaching.Carotenoids have a range of diverse biological functions,especially in relation to human health.There are more than 20 key genes been cloned,which are possible to genetically manipulate carotenoid biosynthesis pathway in plants.In this review,recent progress of carotenoid genetics are summarized,and introduced some successful transgenic plants which were altered the carotenoid composition and content with gene engineering in main vegetables such as tomato,carrot and pepper.
