Abstract Physical and chemical properties of different mixed substrate and its effect on wasabi were studied. The results indicated that the physical and chemical properties of the substrate composed of reed, Vemiculite, sand (1:2: 1) was the best one. It increased contents of chlorophyll and root activities, improved the growth and the swelling of wasabi rhizome, decreased the growing period of wasabi, it also avoided the incidence of diseases and insects in high temperature season and increased yield.
