Abstract Eggplant（ Solanum melongena L.）has strong heterosis. Using male sterile line of eggplant to produce hybrid seed can simplify seed production procedure，reduce production cost and improve seed purity and quality．This paper reviewed the research progress on eggplant male sterile line
resource，physiology basis，genetic characteristics and gene engineering studies．It also prospected the research work on male sterile eggplant in the future．
