Abstract Taking‘Sijixiaobaicai’as test material, this paper studied the effects of biochar addition at different proportions on the mitigation of cadmium(Cd)toxicity in yellow soil and growth of pakchoi. The results showed that adding biochar could obviously increase the pH value of soil contaminated by Cd,significantly decrease the content of available Cd in soil and reduce its bioaccumulation coefficient, thereby relieving the inhibiting effect of Cd on growth of pakchoi. The addition of biochar could also increase the emergence rate, plant height, root length, fresh weight per plant and dry mass per plant of pakchoi;significantly reduced the Cd content in the plant;inhibited Cd being transported from underground to above ground. In general, adding 10% biochar has the best effect.
