Abstract ‘Chengjiang 12’is a new cowpea variety with super-early maturity developed by crossing‘225’as female parent and‘p-3’as male parent through systematic breeding. The duration from sowing to harvest is 45-55 days.As a sprawl plant, the first inflorescence sets at the 2nd-4th node. The flower is light purple in color, and newly grown pod is purple-red in color. The pods are oblong, straight and slightly convex. On average, these pods measure 56.05 cm in length and weigh approximately 21.08 g. The anthocyanin content in the young pods is recorded at 457 mg · kg-1.The seeds themselves are kidneyshaped, with a light reddish-brown seed coat. Its resistance to virus disease is stronger than that of the contrast ‘Chunqiutianzihong’and‘Yipinhong’during the adult stage in experimental fields.Additionally,it demonstrates resistance to root rot during the seedling stage.Under optimal growing conditions,it can yield about 33 t · hm-2,with the early yield constituting more than 65% of the total yield.Taken together,it is particularly well-suited for early maturing cultivation in Sichuan.
