Abstract The growth and flowering stalk formation of early-maturity cultivar (Sijiu Caixin) and mid-maturity cultivar (60 Tianteqingcaixin) with two sowing dates were studied. The results showed that there was a little difference in the course of growth and development between two cultivars. However the fresh and dry weight, leaf number and area, net assimilating rate (NAR) both increased gradually, the increase extent and NAR was highest at flowering-stalk formation stage.
